What is Zellige?

2x2 Rustic Surface Field in Spring

Zellige tile is the traditional tile made in Morroco. The style was first created in the 10th century and has been a tile staple of the region ever since. The tile is hand-made with only the most rudimentary tools. The tile is literally chipped into shape by hand by after it is fired.

Classic zellige tile comes in two basic styles very fine mosaics and closely set squares. The tile is known for its bright colors and irregular surface textures. The tile is very closely set with tiny grout joints.

At Wizard, we make a style of tile that is similar to zellige. We call it Rustic Surface and we make it by glazing the reverse side of our regular tile. The reverse side has the incidental tool and handling makes left by our processing and the edges of the tile are rough and irregular. You can get Rustic Surface in any size and glaze of our Wizard and Bison Brick product lines.
